An Introduction 001

Who was the wise-guy that said it was impolite to discuss finances? Probably some sort of embarrassed capitalist. Or the Victorians.

Whoever it was deserves to know that was a really crap idea for many reasons. We'll talk about finances a lot. Personal ones too. And we're also going to talk about how to discuss it with others. Take that, normative values!

Also by 'we', I mean my rantings to start and hopefully your replies moving ahead.

Being weird about money does not make it better or worse, but it makes us using it effectively as a tool a wee bit harder every time the topic is avoided.

You may be like, "Who is this internet stranger with no credentials or rights to talk about my taboo money fears?" Fair enough.

In terms of bona fides, I'm a lady with two (count 'em) underutilized degrees in finance. I studied both business and personal. (Did you know that a lot of positions in finance are actually sales roles? Because I did not and it took me much too long to figure that out.)

I like finances and money. It's an interesting construct. It facilitates some parts of living and it makes other things hard and stupid. I have strong opinions on some elements of money, but mostly I'm interested in learning about other people's perceptions of it.

I am also a certified life coach (more like certifiable, am I right?). With that I've gone through the process of addressing risks, issues, and perceptions to move towards the things you really want out of life. And so many things that are wanted have some financial component. And people, myself included, can have really complicated relationships with money, even if you don't see what it is at first blush.

So that's why I plan to talk about money and money matters. But I reserve the right as a human person to share my own perspective on a variety of topics. I'm looking forward to diving through a myriad of lived and learned knowledge with all of you.
